TREND Report: corals

In case you haven’t noticed, the color of the summer was coral!  And, for all of those who rushed out early this year to stock up on the bright color, you have nothing to worry about because it will continue trending all through fall.  Try colorblocking with a deep wine hue or chocolate brown.  Or add a pop of color to any monochrome outfit with the perfect peach shoes.  Whatever way you decide to wear it, you know you’ll be chic!

TREND Report: leather

Images via Style.

For many people, wearing leather in a place other than your belt loops, around your wrist or on your feet is a strange concept.  For fashionistas, however, it’s a completely different story.  The Fall ready-to-wear 2011 collections offered up the best in all-over leather: skirts, leggings, jackets, vests and even dresses!  The effect: Amelia Earhart meets fashion editor.  Mixing a leather skirt with a casual sweater screams effortless chic, while a loose vest is the perfect extra layer as the weather starts to cool down into fall.  And, for those of you less inclined to wear the real thing, never fear!  There are plenty of faux options available from some of your favorite designers including Stella McCartney.

TREND Report: tropical prints

Images via Style.

Floral prints have been a statement trend all summer, but now you can channel the vacation spirit a while longer with tropical prints.  Featured in the Resort 2012 collections of Stella McCartney, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Givenchy among many others, these bright florals will hopefully keep beautiful summer weather around for a few more months!  Try pairing your favorite tropical print with a chunky wedge sandal as seen at Marc by Marc Jacobs or throw on an old school visor to channel Givenchy.

TREND Report: colorblocked

Images via Style.

At the beginning of the summer, I featured colorblocking as a trend, so you’re probably wondering why I decided to do it again.  Well, as summer slowly (or too quickly for some of us) winds down, although the thermometer refuses to, I’d like to present to you the pre-fall trend of toned-down colorblocking.  Colorblocking at the beginning of the summer was all about brights and neons, but for pre-fall, cool down the colors and go for deep reds, yellows and blushes.

TREND Report: mustard

Images via Style.

One of the best things about fall is the changing of the leaves from green to the most amazing bright reds, oranges and yellows.  To embody the spirit of seasonal change this fall, try adding to your outfit one piece in a mustard yellow color as seen on many Fall 2011 runways including Isaac Mizrahi, Fendi, Giambattista Valli and Hermes among others.  The darker brownish tone of the mustard is the perfect way to add a bright color to your outfit, while not being as in-your-face as the sunshine-y yellows of summer.  If you think a yellow skirt just isn’t you, try adding a mustard clutch to any basic outfit to add interest and style.

TREND Report: tribal prints

Images via Style.

The tribal trend has been a staple over the past few seasons but was especially popular this Resort season and will continue to be a trend through the fall.  With easy-to-wear tribal printed pieces like maxi skirts and structured dresses, this trend has never been easier to work.  If you’re feeling a little less adventurous and aren’t too keen on rocking a large print, try pairing skinny jeans and a white t-shirt with a pair of ethnic-inspired heels like those from Tory Burch or Proenza Schouler.  Accessories are also a great way to work the tribal trend and designers like Tom Binns have put out amazing designs that work great with any outfit, tribal or otherwise.

TREND Report: sleepwear-inspired

Images via Style.

This latest trend was a big hit on Resort 2012 runways as well Fall/Winter 2011 and will have you dreaming all day.  While this trend may not be for everyone (particularly those who looove the snooze button), the pajama-inspired trend can look chic when done right.  Pair a sleepwear-inspired top with brightly-colored denim and structural heels for a modern day look.  Or try printed PJ-inspired pants with a tucked-in white button down and brogues for a cool work look.

TREND Report: metallics

Images via Style.

This fall, take metallics from a night on the town to a day at the office with ready-to-wear pieces that are anything but 70’s club girl.  With Tory Burch, Thakoon, and Donna Karan, you’ll be carrying the summer sun with you when the weather starts cooling down.  Pair a metallic skirt with a chambray shirt for a Southwestern-vibe as seen at Ralph Lauren or try a pair of gold lamé wide-leg trousers with a tee and leather jacket a la Michael Kors.

TREND Report: tailored pants

If maxis, shifts or sheaths aren’t your thing, never fear.  Tailored trousers are a must-have for this coming fall season and can be dressed up or down, for any occasion.  A pair of classic khaki is updated chic when paired with a jersey top and leather jacket.  Or, if you’re in the mood, try a pair in a bright, bold color for a stunning effect. If brights aren’t your style, try a pair of subdued pink paired with animal-print accessories.  Any way you like them, tailored pants are the perfect go-to piece for this fall.

TREND Report: summer festivals

Dressing for summer festivals can be tricky.  With the uneven terrain, weather and crowds picking the perfect outfit is challenging, but not impossible.  The trick for dressing for summer festivals is light layers, flowing fabrics and easy-to-walk-in shoes.  Try pairing a maxi skirt with a tank and flat sandals for a boho-chic look or a pair denim cut-off shorts and a fringed crop top with a cross-body mini bag.

If you are a fan of street style blogs, then you’ve probably noticed this trend popping up quite a bit.  Accessorizing in brights adds the perfect amount of color to any of your favorite outfits!  This trend is especially chic when worked into an all-white or neutral outfit.  Plus, it’s a complete mood-lifter and can come in the form of shoes, bags, jewelry, or hair accessories!

TREND Report: Ajak Deng

This is by far one of my favorite TREND Report posts I’ve done.  And the reason: Ajak Deng.  Not only is she a street style goddess and fierce beauty on the runway, she is also a humble and gracious role model.

TREND Report: blush

Images via Style.com

If you’ve been able to keep up with the random releases of Resort 2012 collections, then you probably have noticed a nice mix of pastel thrown in between the intense neon and bold prints.  Blush is the perfect summer color and when worn in light fabrics, it can create an easy yet beautiful I-just-threw-this-on look.  Pairing pale pink with weapon-like accessories can add some edge to an otherwise extremely feminine ensemble.  Bright pops of colors in your shoes and bag will take the classic lady-like color to an updated and chic level.

TREND Report: color blocked

If you’ve been keeping up with my TREND Report posts (which obviously you have, my dearly devoted trend setters), you might have noticed that I never shy away from brights!  In fact, I am DRAWN towards them.  And you should be too!  Not only are bright colors a great way to announce your arrival, but they also exude self-confidence and style, when done right.  The trickiest way to wear brights: color blocking.  The key to color blocking is to wear compatible colors in tailored and polished shapes.  While keeping the accessories neutral is common, if you’re feeling ultra daring, add more color in your shoes and bag!

TREND Report: stripes

Ever heard someone say “horizontal stripes make you look wider”?  Well, that’s still true in some cases, but luckily, to keep on trend with today’s feature, stripes have gone under the knife and come out more updated than ever.  Horizontal, vertical, asymmetric…if you can dream it, it’s been done with stripes this season.  Even shoes have been striped so you can keep your feet on trend too!

TREND Report: monochrome

Images: Jil Sander S2011 RTW, ADAM Resort 2012, Bottega Veneta Resort 2012.

Ladies and gentleman, let me reintroduce you to an old friend: Monochrome.  You might not recognize monochrome from the pictures above because recently, monochrome has undergone a makeover.  No longer does the idea of wearing an outfit entirely of one color apply only to black and white.  In fact, for summer, the brighter the better.  BUT, since wearing orange or yellow head-to-toe may be a bit intimidating for many women, here’s how some brave fashionistas carry off the trend in real life:

The Man Repeller, Leandra Medine, pops in purple, while a Style Pantry owner re-defines blue jeans.  Finally, The Sartorialist spotted the third woman on the streets of Milan and couldn’t resist taking her picture.  The trend is easier than it looks and I guarantee your overflowing closet could put together more than a few monochrome looks.  For more ideas, check out the SHOP section below and boldly go where your closet has never gone before with monochrome!

Blue: Splendid Safari-style shirt, ADAM Pleated skirt.
Coral: Chinti and Parker Organic cotton tank, Vanessa Bruno Tapered crepe pants.
Green: Splendid Cotton tee, Alice + Olivia Cady satin shorts.
Tan: Chloe Silk-crepe shirt, Kelly Bergin Leather mini skirt.
Red: Chloe Cape-back silk-crepe top, Michael Kors Samantha skinny pant.

TREND Report: wide-leg

Above: Bottega Veneta Resort 2012, Style.com; Chanel Resort 2012, Style.com; Sportmax Resort 2012, Style.com.  M Missoni patterned wide-leg pants, Net-a-Porter.com; J.Crew Irene orange linen wide-leg pant, Net-a-Porter.com;  Tucker printed silk blouse, Net-a-Porter.com; J.Crew striped jersey top, Net-a-Porter.com.

While older generations may find the wide-leg trend evoking images of Janis Joplin and peace sign-wielding Vietnam protesters, we who live on the chic side of life see otherwise.   Denim and pant alike were stretched out and lengthened on the Spring 2011 and Resort 2012 runways.  Paired with a sheer top and classic blazer, the look that comes together oozes luxury.  Plus, wide-leg pants are extremely flattering on women of all body types.  And, unlike the denim leggings of fall and winter, wide-leg pants can be perfectly light and airy for summer.  Pick a pair in a bold color for added effect and compliment with a favorite pair of skinny wedges (chunky will definitely give you the 1970’s effect) and a structured, lady-like clutch and you’ll be turning sun-burned heads all summer.
