Last weekend was my first time at Fro Fashion Week, and I am so glad I went. My friend and fellow blogger Ebony from Make Me Over Eb spoke at this event last year. She told me it was a really great event that I should try to go to and see what it is about. Since I’ve decided to go natural again, and the event was just three hours away I said, “why not?” Well… so far, so good.
All of the women here at Fro Fashion Week Spring 2013 have been so inspirational. We shared our hair journeys, and special hair tips. It was like we were sharing some kind of special hair bonding experience. We laughed and joked and had us a good ole time! I bought a VIP pass, so I received a box full of natural hair goodies that should help me transition from chemically relaxed hair to fluffy and full natural hair. I miss my old hair texture, my natural hair texture, and seeing all of these women with beautiful natural styles is making me impatient for hair growth, but excited for change.
I met a lot of brands that have some very interesting natural hair products. I really can’t wait to meet them. I met the brother/sister duo of OBIA Natural Haircare, I met the creative director for Shea Moisture, and I met Youtube guru BlackOnyx77. She is the cofounder of Alikay Naturals hair products, and was a delight to meet. When I met Minista Jazz at the Hair Tease booth, she gave me her daily affirmation. I will be saying, “I am beautiful when I think beautiful thoughts.” everyday now. I also met the following brands: Purgasm Shop, Brijor Boutique, Uneshia Salters from The Textured Hair Institute, Mainelement:Love, Curl Collection, and Naptural Passions. I can’t wait to try their products. Oh and speaking of Hair Tease and Mainelement:Love again, I had never heard of hair teas before. Both companies sell hair teas though. Apparently you brew them and then wash and condition your hair with them. Who freaking knew?!
I also went to a ton of informational workshops that taught me how to transition to natural with stylist Deshonica Kerrie. I learned about natural hair in the workplace with Jasmine Johnson. I also learned some twisting techniques from BlackOnyx77. The best part was when I went to the Curls Unleashed workshop and was taught how to walk the runway by model Kenya Thomas and met natural hair stylist Key from Key Essentials Hair.
Saturday night was Fro Fashion Week Spring 2013 runway night. I saw a ton of designers and lots of cute hair and makeup looks. Check the gallery to see my picks for the best looks of the night. Watching plus size model, and Fro Fashion Week Spring 2013 cover model, Chisandra Wells walk the runway was a treat and definitely fun! On Sunday, I woke up early and went to Bloggers, Brands, and Brunch. I was so great to meet fellow bloggers and brands and listen to their stories. Youtube guru CharyJay spoke about vlogging. She talked to us about working with brands and what products you should use to make a great eye catching video. She definitely validated a lot of things for me.
Fro Fashion Week Spring 2013 was a lot of fun. I can’t believe I missed the other four seasons of the fashion week for natural hair divas. Next season will be the first season outside of Atlanta. I can’t wait to see what Tarin Boone, 25 year old founder of NaturallyMe! Media, is bringing in the months to come!
