There are several duos in fashion that get me every time. Not so much the design duos, I’m talking more about the loving partnerships like Grace Coddington and Didier Malige, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin or Isabel and Ruben Toledo.
Some may know Isabel as the woman whose designs First Lady Michelle Obama wore on Inauguration Day, and Ruben as the quirky fashion illustrator whose artwork has been everywhere from Nordstrom’s advertising to book covers. The Toledos were born in Cuba, but raised in the United States. They met each other as high school students in New Jersey, got married in 1984 and then embarked on their art and fashion world careers in New York City. Together in 2005, they won the Cooper-Hewitt Design Award for their achievements in fashion.
Currently, Isabel is also known to the masses for her brightly colored Payless shoe line that offers high fashion at more affordable prices. While Ruben showed his artwork last week at a Louis Vuitton boutique in Soho, New York – he has been illustrating various cities for the Louis Vuitton City Guide books since 1998.
