UPDATED:John Galliano Apologizes While The Fashion Industry Lacks Accountability

After being fired from Dior, John Galliano has apologized for his actions by releasing a statement saying, “Anti-Semitism and racism have no part in our society. I unreservedly apologize for my behavior in causing any offence.”

According to WWD:

In the statement, Galliano made no mention of the video, but said he takes responsibility for the “circumstances in which I found myself and for allowing myself to be seen to be behaving in the worst possible light. I only have myself to blame and I know that I must face up to my own failures and that I must work hard to gain people’s understanding and compassion. To start this process I am seeking help and all I can hope for in time is to address the personal failure which led to these circumstances and try and earn people’s forgiveness.

I am happy that he finally decided to apologize. I just wish he had done this sooner. I am also happy that Galliano is “seeking help.” There have been rumors of his alcoholism for a while now, and since yesterday, there has been a rumor going around that he has checked himself into the Meadows rehab facility in Arizona at the urging of friends. Hopefully he will see the error of his ways, and actually understand the gravity of his mistake.

I will say this. I am very upset that Franca Sozzani, Georgio Armani, Chanel Iman,Patricia Field and others have come to his defense. They should have condemned him. When my friends do something wrong, I let them know. I don’t sugar coat anything, and I expect them to do the same with me. That is what being a real friend truly is. I am sick and tired of the fashion industry sticking up for people who do stupid things just because they are are good at making clothes or shooting pictures or editing magazines. If you are wrong, you are wrong. The people of the fashion industry need to learn to take accountability for their actions.
